Creative Arts Academy

Community Folk Art Center offers diverse education programming in the visual and expressive arts, through classes and workshops, gallery talks, film screenings, lectures and performances. Our classes and workshops, for adults and children, range from ceramics to West African dance. However they vary throughout the year, so please continue to visit our website for current classes and workshops. CFAC’s signature youth arts education program is the Creative Arts Academy (CAA). CAA is a Saturday youth arts enrichment program for elementary and middle school students interested in visual and expressive arts.

The mission of Creative Arts Academy (CAA) is to engage, nurture, and empower young people from the city of Syracuse through the arts. CAA is an arts education and training program comprised of three disciplines: dance, theater, and visual arts. CAA is a tuition-free program for students in grades 3-7 who are accepted after an audition and interview process. CAA believes the arts provide a sound foundation for young people, resulting in an improved sense of self, fortifying them to perform better in school and unearthing their infinite potential.

Through CAA, students demonstrate increased skills, knowledge, and understanding of the arts, exceeding New York State arts education standards. Keeping this program tuition-free allows Community Folk Art Center to remain committed to underserved and underrepresented communities in the Syracuse area. The three disciplines of Creative Arts Academy are dance, theater, and visual art.

New young creatives are always welcome! Our application process is on a rolling basis. To learn more about the program or to schedule an audition, contact the CAA Coordinator at 315.442.2230 or at cfac@syr.edu.

During the 2010-2011 school year, CAA visual art students began a collaboration with international artist Rigo 23 in creating a mural to address the pressing issue of youth violence in Syracuse. This mural became a yearlong project, and the students worked with lead visual art instructor Arthur Brangman to complete it. In order to spread the students’ message outside of the city of Syracuse, Community Folk Art Center is selling T-shirts that feature an image of the mural on the front and the CAA logo on the back. T-shirts are available to purchase for $20 plus $5 shipping and handling via PayPal. All proceeds will benefit Creative Arts Academy programming. Additionally we ask that if you purchase a T-shirt you put it on, snap a photo, and upload it to our Facebook page. The more diverse the location, the better! Our students are hoping to see how far their artistic message can spread around the country and, hopefully, the world.
