Community Folk Art Center's film program is designed to provide additional support to existing programming. Many of our films are related to the exhibitions on view in content or cultural perspective, and we also screen films that are connected to the diverse constituencies we serve.

On Thursday, June 21 at 6:30 p.m. we are hosting a free screening of Pariah, directed by Dee Rees and produced by Spike Lee. Pariah is a coming of age story about an African American, teenage girl living in Brooklyn who uses poetry to cope with her home life and coming out as a lesbian. Living with an annoying, younger sister and parents whose marriage is strained at best, she escapes home by entering the gay club scene with her older, lesbian friend Laura. In this film Rees shows lesbianism in a way that is not contextualized by sexual experimentation or immature, teen angst, but real feelings that the audience knows will continue for the protagonist. Co-sponsored by the SU LGBT Center, this film was the 2011 Sundance Film Festival Official Selection. Join the conversation by following us on Twitter @CFAC #Pariah.
