2009 Creative Arts Academy Auditions

All performers grade 7-11 are welcome!

Mission:
The mission of Creative Arts Academy (The Academy) is to engage, nurture and empower young people from the city of Syracuse through the arts, in preparation for advance study in the visual and expressive arts. We believe that the arts provide a sound foundation for young people resulting in an improved sense of self, fortifying them to perform better in school and unearth their infinite potential.

Curriculum:
Each course of study involves learning the history of each discipline and in particular, the impact African Diasporas artists who have made within the field. Our goal is provide well-rounded arts education experience so they are prepared to continue their studies beyond their high school experience. In addition, The Academy collaborates with area artists, schools and organizations to provide enriching experiences in visual and expressive arts.

Audition Information:
A panel composed of the community’s finest teaching artists and educators will audition students in a non-competitive format to select students for the Creative Arts Academy. Auditions are being held for Dance, Musical Theatre and Visual Arts. Classes will begin on Monday, September 21, 2009 and run to the end of May 2010.

Audition Schedule:

15-20 minute time slots will be allotted for each student audition

Saturday, July 11th, 2009: 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Sunday, July 12th, 2009: 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Saturday, August 1st, 2009: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Sunday, August 2nd 2009: 1:00 pm – 4:00pm

Audition Requirements for each discipline:

Visual Arts

Students in the Visual Arts must devote their attention to the technical development of fundamental skills. Each student will have the opportunity to takes classes in drawing and painting, and selected other mediums.

Requirements: Please select from one of the following:

  • Self-portrait (from direct observation)
  • What you see while looking out your window
  • A section of your room, including your bed
  • Something from your imagination

Note: In addition to the above requirements, it is important that applicants bring other examples of work.

Dance

Requirements:

  • Prepare a one to two minute solo routine in hip hop, ballet, jazz, modern, or a dance form that is representative of your talent
  • Bring your own accompaniment on CD and have music cued to your music

Attire:

  • Dress in suitable, clean dance attire
  • Ladies: comfortable attire, black leotards, black or pink tights, ballet slippers
  • Gentlemen: white t-shirt, black tights, ballet slippers, sweats or baggy shorts

Musical Theatre

Musical Theatre is comprised of three disciplines: dance, music, and theatre. The Musical Theatre audition includes participation in a dance class, song and acting requirement.

Musical Theatre Dance Requirements:

Applicants will be taught a dance combination specific to Musical Theatre and should come in appropriate attire for moving (see dance guidelines for attire specifications).

Musical Theatre Music Requirements:

Applicants must bring CD accompaniment or sheet music to be played and must perform the following:

  • One up-tempo song, one ballad, or a classical piece.

Students must be prepared to sing the entire song if requested.

Musical Theatre Acting Requirements:

  • Students must be prepared to perform a Contemporary monologue provided by a CAA teaching artist. If the student wants to read something of their choosing, CAA must approve it. Poetry will be accepted.
  • Please be prepared to have the monologue stopped by a Teaching Artist or panel member.
